I Wanna Hear it – Loops Album Demo by Simon Wright
In November last year I bought myself a new toy, a Boss RC-300 Loop Station. I had no idea at the time how much this little piece of technology would inspire my musical direction. I spend hours on this thing trying out grooves and progressions. For those of you that are unfamiliar with what a loop station is, basically, it’s a sampling machine that records my voice and guitar on the fly then plays it back in a continuous loop. Click here for a video of one of the worlds best know loop artists DubFx explaining his looper.
To start out with I took a few of my favorite covers and figured out ways to perform them in the loops format. I’ve always found replication a great way to learn a new instrument, and learning to loop is just like learning a new instrument. I made a few videos and a live loop cover EP and performed over 80 shows live with my looper including a string of 30 shows over 5 weeks on Koh Tao in Thailand. Click here for a free download of my loops cover EP “Live on Koh Tao” featuring Andy V on Keys, sax, backing vox and loops.
Now that I’m familiar with my looper, it’s time to start getting into the real stuff. There is still a lot to learn but the skills I’ve picked up so far are enough to get the creative juices flowing. The video above is the first demo for my new album of loops. I’ll be writing a bunch of new material and also reworking some of the older stuff as well as collaborating with some talented crew. Please feel free to get in contact with feedback, ideas, album names, collaboration suggestions and please help share the love on social media. I’d love you all to get involved.

A couple of years ago I was contacted by Australian Indigenous songwriter Benny Walker and asked to play his wedding in Echuca/Moama. I often get asked to do weddings but it is particularly encouraging when you are asked by a fellow musician. To be asked to be the entertainment for someone’s big day is always an honor and us musos can be pretty choosy when it comes to what we like. Anyway, since then I have been to Echuca many times, first to play Benny and Fiona’s wedding after which we were invited back to pay many more private events including the wedding of Benny’s brother Andrew Walker of the Carlton Football Club. Every visit has seen great times, the boys and I look forward to our adventures to the VIC/NSW border towns. I’ve met a bunch of great people up there and I’m beginning to feel quite at home. Still though, to this day, after 9 shows we have still not done a public performance. This show at the American Hotel will be the first….. and what a way to kick it off.
Opening on the night is Victorian Indigenous Performing Arts Award winner for Best New Talent 2012 Mr Benny Walker with his sun ripened folk/pop. Followed by an original set from me and the boys; Mikey Chan (lead guitar) Richy Rose (Bass) Shane Evans (Drums, Backing vocals). Then finally well be bringing in the party with a set from the Simon Wright Band featuring Benny walker playing a mix of originals from both Benny and me as well a a few of our favorite covers.
It’s going to be a one of a kind gig and I’m not lying when I say I’m pretty damn excited.
Where: The American Hotel 239-249 Hare St, Echuca VIC 3564.
Date: Friday March 21st
Time: The night kicks off at 8pm,
Cost: Entry is free.

The “Bruns” Sunday aro session has turned into a bit of an icon in the local area. Every week they are pulling great acts like Bobby Alu, Oka, Tijuana Cartel and Donavon Frankenreiter. After a great gig up at the Bruns Almost a year ago Dave the booker down there has been trying to get us a Sunday spot, but bad luck has plagued us. Last time we were up, it rained out which was so disappointing. Lets hope for some beautiful north coast summer weather for this one. I can’t wait. The gig is 4 sets too, so you get to see the full show here (ie. extended outros on every track because we don’t have enough material to fill 4 hours, ha, but lets be honest they’re the best bits right?) My Old man will be on lead guitar, Shaneo on drums and our bass player from Melbourne is comin up this time too, Mr Richy Rose. It will be a great gig, don’t miss it.
The boys and I are returning once again to our lovable home town Byron Bay for the new years celebrations.
My first ever payed gig was at the Rails almost 10 years ago. I can remember thinking back then how much I would love to do a New Years eve there. We’ll, this will be our 3rd one. Joining us again this year is our good mate Blues, Roots rocker Marshall Okell. His show is amazing, super high energy, big thumping guitar heavy blues grooves with the occasional roots ballad thrown in for dynamic. Marshall is another Byron Bay local and Mike down the Rails tells me this year they are keeping the price down ($20 bargain) in an effort to make it the locals spot this NYE.
Tickets are NOT available online, only from the venue itself. It probably will sell out so I suggest getting there early. Tickets can be purchased from the venue from mid December and at the gate.
If anyone is flying in from out of town and worried about not getting a ticket, get in contact with me here – http://thesimonwrightband.fanbridge.com/fan_questions
