Tell me this isn’t art!

There is an ongoing debate typical with the older generation and the youth, though the conversation crosses many ages and demographics. Is graffiti art or vandalism?
I don’t think anyone could watch this video and not agree that in this case, it is most definitely art. Not just the Graffing, but the cinematography and the sound track. A truly inspiring performance by all involved.

My home town Melbourne is a mecca for street art and I personally love it. I know a lot of my peers do to and I often see travelers taking the time to walk Melbournes famous alley ways taking pictures of some of the best street art Australia has to offer.

I understand that the horrible “tags” that go up through out the city can often look pretty bad but we need to understand. There is no such thing as a professional without there being a whole bunch of armatures. There is no one out there is saying Goyte is shit because they saw a weak performance by some bloke named Brian at the local open mic night last Monday. Bad comes with good and good with bad. I say ban the billboards before you ban the can.

Gay Marriage, What’s the Issue Here?

Stick with me, at first it may seem that I am arguing against same sex marriage, as I have often been misunderstood in this conversation. The whole argument I find misdirected and shallow. Gay marriage shouldn’t be the center of this debate. I think the fact that we can ask the question of “Should gays be allowed to marry?” without screwing up our faces and cowering into a pose of self loathing is the real issue.

The question of “Should gays be allowed to marry?” to me is about as irrelevant as “Should red heads be allowed to marry?”. Of course they should. What a silly question. Why are we spending so much time on this? There must be more important things that need to be done.
However, this is where it becomes a little grey. Now that the debate has begun, same sex marriage has become a symbol of minority liberation. The gay community is not uniting in the fight to put-a-ring-on-it, merely using this as a symbol to fight for equality and to be accepted once and for all as part of the community. This is why the debate is so heated and no one seems to see eye to eye, no one knows where the point is.
“But the bible says……” irrelevant, we are not debating religious beliefs.
“But the marriage act says”……. irrelevant, laws are made, and changed, to protect the innocent, not to enslave us to old ways of thinking.
Let’s make it clear on what we are really arguing about.

Any and all consenting adult relationships should have the same rights and recognition as the next. I have no doubt that this will all be over in a few years, in favour of same sex marriage, which is great. But…. The real issue will still not be resolved unless it is first exposed, clarified and understood by us all. People are by nature kind, caring animals. It is fear that makes strangers come across as enemies. Fear that lives in the shadow of ignorance. To understand your neighbor is to love and accept them…… or at least respect their humanity. The gay community are not sexual monsters hoping to recruit your children to their master plan. They are just like you and me. I’d like to get married some day too. If someone told me I wasn’t allowed to because of the choice I made in a life partner, I would be furious.
So I say speak up people, be proud. Do not accept the words of those that put the rights of others below their own. Not just in the gay marriage debate but anywhere that you see injustice. And be open minded, be curious, investigate, particularly when it comes to your enemies. Fear feeds hatred and hatred feeds oppression.

To all my gay brothers and sisters of past and present, I admire and respect you. Stick to your guns and load them with love.
